and was the highest end production model next to Fender's Custom Shop guitars. There was some transitional Strat Plus' in 1999 that were a mix of the new DX Strat series and the Plus Series.
You can tell by the serial number, which started with DN9XXXXX and they also had a chrome Fender logo on the headstock.
While some were sold as a "Plus" they were sort of a hybrid have Fender's new Noiseless pickups, yet retaining the locking tuners, roller nut and American bridge.
These went on to be the American Deluxe Strat Series. (Why you are at it, check out my wild and crazy Custom Strat Plus guitars!

The Plus Series was a very good attempt to reclaim Fender USA's floundering reputation, as quality had drastically gone down hill under CBS's ownership. The Stratocaster was Leo Fender's second guitar design after the Telecaster around 1953, with actual production beginning in early 1954.
As a result of this Fender's sales declined markedly in the mid and late 1970's.
The serial numbers do not reflect this change - Fender continued to make instruments using existing serial number schemes. There are three single coil pickups and the jack is recessed and angled into guitar top. Fender was purchased by CBS in 1965 (pre-CBS strats are more desirable) and 1966 brought several changes including a larger headstock and a large "F" logo on the neck/body joining plate. It featured the first combined bridge-vibrato unit providing the strat tremolo. In 1977 a 5 way selector was added to provide combinations of front and middle pickup and front and back pickup.A direct result of this effort was the introduction of the Fender American Vintage Reissue Series. This series of instruments included reissues based off a 1957 Strat, 1962 Strat, 1952 Tele, 19 Precision Bass, and a 1962 Jazz Bass.
